Who wins the speed test – full-fibre or 5G?

We say it time and time again, you deserve internet that just works whenever you need it. It’s great to see new technologies being brought into our everyday, including full-fibre and 5G to make our lives that extra bit smoother. But, which one is the faster one to opt-for? Say you’re downloading a new Netflix series, is it better to download using your 5G or stick to your home full-fibre internet?

How fast is 5G?

The 5G average in the UK is somewhere between 150-200Mb download and 14.7BMb upload speeds. In translation, if you’re watching a movie online, then you’ll probably be impressed with minimal buffering, but if you’re sending a file through Teams, it might take a while longer. But, it’s important to mention that the jump between 4G and 5G is impressive and gives you the flexibility for speedy internet when you’re out and about.

How fast is full-fibre compared to 5G?

Let’s compare that to Lit Fibre’s full-fibre! We’ve created the perfect three packages that work for everyone – all offering different speeds. Starting off with the Lit100, it’s the ideal match for smaller households and casual surfers giving 100Mb speeds. Upgrading to Lit500, which is great for streaming families, your home will be connected with 500Mb speeds. And the final package for those with the real need for speed, you’ve got lightning fast 1Gb (or 1,000Mb) for all house members to use. If you were to pick this top full-fibre package, that’s up to 5x faster than 5G!

The biggest difference = symmetrical speeds

The one thing that’s missing for 5G is having symmetrical speeds, which means that both your upload and download are equal. Most of the major broadband providers tell you how many Mb you’ll be getting – but only for download! A good example to explain this would be a Teams call where you can hear and see everyone properly, but the people on the other end are getting choppy audio and awkward screen freezes on their end. Symmetrical speeds are a huge game-changer, here’s a bit more info about it.

If it was a competition, full-fibre would have got first place for being the speediest, and 5G would grab the noble second place! Plus, with the symmetrical speed element, it’s definitely a much more reliable option.
